Academic Setup: Branches, Classes, Sections, Subjects & Terms
Build out your school's structure before adding students — branches, classes, sections, subjects, and academic terms/years.
Where to start
Before adding students, set up your school's structure from Academic Setup in the sidebar (admin access only):
- Branches — if your school has more than one physical location, add each as a branch.
- Classes — e.g. "Grade 1", "JSS 2", "Year 7" — whatever your school calls them.
- Sections — optional sub-groups within a class, e.g. "Blue" and "Gold" sections of Grade 1. Most features (timetable, homework, fee invoices) work fine with or without sections — just leave a class with no sections if you don't use them.
- Subjects — Math, English, Science, etc. — shared across your whole school, not per-class.
- Terms and Academic Years — your school's own calendar, used for exams, fees, and report cards.
Promoting students at year-end
At the end of an academic year, use Promote Students (on the Academic Setup page) to move an entire class's active roster up to the next class in one action — this is logged, not silently overwritten, and never promotes a student who has already graduated (see Alumni below).
Assigning teachers to classes and subjects
From a staff member's profile, assign them to the classes and subjects they teach. This controls what a non-admin teacher can see and do — they can only mark attendance, enter grades, post homework, or appear on the timetable for classes they're actually assigned to.
